Westchester County Continues Major Restoration of Historic Merestead Farmhouse
June 22, 2026 – Westchester County has begun Phase I of a major capital restoration project at the historic Merestead estate in Mount Kisco, putting more than $3 million in the preservation of the property's farmhouse and related structures. The restoration follows the lifting of a longstanding order that granted greater autonomy over management of the property and unlocked additional funds for community use.

The restoration is part of a larger $5.4 million capital improvement initiative focused on safeguarding the architectural and historical integrity of Merestead, one of Westchester County’s most treasured landmarks. The farmhouse, portions of which date back to 1860 and the early 1900s, is among the oldest buildings on the 130-acre estate, along with the horse barn.
Phase I of the project includes extensive restoration of the farmhouse’s exterior and foundation, and is expected to be completed by the end of 2026. Phase II will focus on renovating the building’s interior and upgrading essential infrastructure, including the water supply and sewage-disposal systems.

The estate was home to Margaret Sloane Patterson, daughter of William Sloane, president of a renowned luxury furniture company, and her husband, Dr. Robert Patterson, a distinguished Manhattan orthopedic surgeon. This investment demonstrates our commitment to preserving the County’s rich history while ensuring that future generations can continue to enjoy and learn from this remarkable property.”
Westchester County Parks Acting Commissioner Peter Tartaglia said: “We are fortunate that the Patterson family entrusted Merestead to Westchester County. Their gift ensured the preservation of an extraordinary estate that combines architectural beauty, historical significance and breathtaking natural scenery. These restoration efforts will help protect the farmhouse and its surrounding structures for decades to come. Visitors will fully appreciate the craftsmanship, history and stunning landscape that make Merestead such a special destination.”
The Pattersons deeded Merestead to Westchester County in 1982. When the County assumed full possession in 2000, it was the largest gift ever made to Westchester County. Today, the estate remains a cherished public resource, offering visitors an opportunity to explore its historic buildings, scenic grounds and panoramic views overlooking the surrounding valley.
